Teleidoscopes

Make an amazable kaleidoscope-type toy from mirrors and electrical tape!

What you need:
3 Plexiglas mirrors
Plastic Tape
2 Half Straws
Scissors

Optional:
Large Glass Marble
Diffraction Grating Material
Poster board

What you do:
1. Peel protective covering off Plexiglas mirrors. For safety reasons, DO NOT use glass mirrors!!

2. Lay the mirrors on the table, face down and parallel to each other, with straws between them for spacers.

3. Measure plastic tape to cover the left end of the three pieces. Apply the tape so that about one third is attached to the Plexiglas, with the rest hanging off the end. Repeat on the right end. Set the straws aside.

4. Carefully lift the entire unit, and turn over. Turn the tape over the end to completely cover the end of the mirrors, and to hold the mirrors together. With the mirrored side down, run a third piece of tape down the center of the mirrors, with a small amount hanging off one end.

5. Pick up the unit, and fold into a triangle shape. Look through the teleidoscope, and observe what happens as you change the degree of the angles. Encourage the students to discuss their observations.

6. Choose the angle you like and attach the small flap of tape to
stabilize it. Crimp the tape with your fingers to make a snug fit.

7. Measure tape to cover each long seam. Apply the tape to cover the edges of the mirrors.

8. Measure tape to wrap around each end of your teleidoscope. Make sure you have enough to overlap at the end.

9. Use stickers to personalize your teleidoscope.

10.Use your teleidoscope to look at your environment. Make observations about how things look. Have FUN!

Enhancements:

You can change one end of your teleidoscope to get different effects. Try one of the following ideas, or make up your own!

Attach a large glass marble to one end. You may attach it directly to the teleidoscope, or make a detachable end piece. Measure poster board just under 5/8th inch wide and long enough to wrap around your teleidoscope with a small overlap. Cover both sides of this strip with tape. Wrap the poster board loosely around your teleidoscope, and crease the corners. Use tape to stabilize this structure. Set the marble on top, and use tape to attach it. The tape should extend about half way up the marble.

Make a similar structure with diffraction grating material. Cut the material in a triangular shape large enough so that it can be taped to the sides of the end-piece structure.

Use a hole puncher, either the standard round hole or a fancy one, to punch one or more holes in construction paper. Cut out the paper to fit the end of your teleidoscope and attach it with more tape. Look through either end.
